In this fun drill from 2014 national champion head coach Russ Rose, outside hitters play against blockers and team defense to improve their hitting accuracy and ability to adapt to the defense. The drill presents a competitive format for players to get better.
15 Point Game
Drill Summary: Outside hitters line up in a single file line in the corner and the first two in line step up into the drill. On the same side as the outside hitters, there should be a setter at the middle of the net. On the opposite side of the court, there’s two blockers and team defense. A coach take turns serving a ball to the first outside hitter, who must pass the ball to the setter and then receive a set on the outside to try for the kill. The second outside hitter in the drill covers. After each rep, rotate outside hitters. If the defense successfully defends the ball, they get a point. Spot the defense four or five points, and the first team to 15 wins.
Keys to the Drill:
1) Decision making.
2) Good passing.
3) Big, smart swings.
